— Frequently Asked

Common questions, answered plainly.

What's the difference between RCRA and California non-RCRA hazardous waste?

RCRA is the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act framework, which applies nationwide and governs roughly forty listed (F, K, P, U) and characteristic (D-coded) waste categories. California recognizes additional waste streams as hazardous under state law that aren't federally regulated — these are called "California-only" or non-RCRA hazardous wastes. They still require manifesting, transport by a registered hauler, and disposition at an approved facility, but they follow California-specific rules. We handle both.

How quickly can HDS pick up hazardous waste?

Typical turnaround from quote request to scheduled pickup is the same business day for the quote and 24–72 hours for the pickup itself, depending on waste profile, location, and transporter availability. Emergency or compressed-timeline pickups can often be scheduled inside 48 hours — call us and we'll work the schedule.

What documentation will I receive after pickup?

You receive a signed copy of every uniform hazardous waste manifest at the time of pickup, and a final certificate of destruction or disposition once the waste reaches its end-of-life facility. We retain copies for our records and can re-issue documentation years later if a regulator or auditor requests it.

Does HDS handle small-quantity (lab pack) waste?

Yes. Lab packs — small containers of various chemicals consolidated into a single overpack drum — are a routine part of our work, particularly for biotech, pharma, and research facilities. We also handle conditionally exempt small quantity generator (CESQG) volumes for facilities that don't generate enough to be on a regular schedule.

How are pickup costs typically structured?

Pricing varies based on waste type, volume, location, and disposal pathway (incineration, recovery, stabilization, and so on). Because we operate as a licensed broker rather than a facility owner, we can route waste through the most cost-effective appropriate facility for each stream instead of being committed to a single disposal partner — and volume-negotiated rates pass through to you. We provide written quotes, usually the same business day, so there are no surprises at pickup.

Why use a broker instead of a national disposal company?

National waste conglomerates own their own disposal facilities, which gives them a financial incentive to route your waste to those sites whether or not they're the right or lowest-cost option for your specific streams. As an independent broker, we're not tied to any single facility. We profile your waste, then route each stream to the most appropriate licensed facility at the best available rate — and we own the cradle-to-grave documentation. You get the buying leverage of volume without the conflict of interest.

What states does HDS serve?

California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, and West Texas. California carries the most compliance complexity because of the state's broader hazardous waste classification; the others follow federal RCRA more closely. All inquiries reach the same operations contact at (800) 662-4374.

Do you serve households or small consumers?

No. HDS works with commercial and industrial generators only. Households and small consumers with hazardous materials should contact 1-800-CLEAN-UP or their local county household hazardous waste program for free disposal options.

How do I prepare drums and containers for pickup?

Containers should be DOT-compliant (typically 55-gallon steel or plastic drums with secure closures), properly labeled with required hazardous waste markings, and accumulated according to the dates required by your generator status. We can supply replacement drums and labels as part of pickup. If you're unsure about labeling or container compliance, call us before the pickup is scheduled — we'd rather coach you through it than have a transporter arrive at a non-compliant load.

Do you handle retail store closures and liquidations?

Yes — it's a specialty. Multi-site retail closures, beauty and cosmetics liquidations, and big-box shutdowns have their own compressed-timeline logistics. We coordinate the hazardous-waste piece across every store in the project from a single point of contact. See our Retail Closures page, and for beauty retail specifically, our Cosmetics & Beauty Compliance Guide.
